The term “front runner” is of course familiar to tennis fans; it describes players who can no longer let a lead be taken out of their hands. The opposite would be the comebackers who can still turn a game around after a weak start. And one would actually assume that this quality is widespread among top people. But far from it!

Because only Novak Djokovic and Carlos Alcaraz had a positive record last season after losing the first set. Industry leader Djokovic lost the first round of 13 games and still won eight of these matches. This gives a percentage of 61.5.

Zverev with a clearly negative balance

Carlos Alcaraz, on the other hand, started with a deficit 16 times - and was only able to turn nine matches in his favor. Which corresponds to a win rate of 56.3 percent.
But otherwise? Daniil Medvedev, number three in the world according to the rankings and the first pursuer of Djokovic and Alcaraz, has a record of nine wins and 15 defeats after losing the first set. Jannik Sinner, who has shined in the last few weeks of the season, is 7:10.

And things didn't go well for Alexander Zverev either when the first set went haywire. 13 wins versus 23 defeats. In Zverev's case, it should of course be noted that the aftermath of his injury break clouded the balance sheet, especially at the beginning of the year.
